Jade War
by Fonda Lee
Damn she really did that. And I completely respect it.
Jade War is a book that lives up to the name, it’s tough, it’s gruelling and it rises to the challenge of a sequel. Throughout this book, I felt anxious and unsure as each character made decision after decision each of greater consequence. The characters are flawed, but not in how they’re written, in who they are. They’re not perfect, they’re not even always good, but they do what needs to be done for the good of their clan.
My favourite character from the previous book, Anden, claims that title once again, but despite that it was Shae’s actions within this story that were the most gripping. The near impossible choices she made, sometimes with little hesitation, were always what was needed, and like everything in this book, came with consequences.
The world Fonda Lee had built only got bigger. We were able to have a deeper look into foreign nations, and see the opinions and experiences surrounding jade, from the perspectives of others who aren’t ‘green-boned’. It goes without saying that I loved this book, and cannot wait to finish the trilogy.
