Morgan Is My Name
by Sophie Keetch
Tragic, powerful, but one of the most well written characters I've read in a long time.
Sophie Keetch’s writing is amazing, and Morgan Is My Name is a book that truly did world building right. I’ve not felt like I know a character as well as Lady Morgan in just one book, but after experiencing her life throughout girlhood to early adulthood, I’ll honestly say she’s a character that I love.
For anyone who doesn’t know, this retelling is told entirely from Morgan le Fay’s perspective. She is a character that, in most tellings of this legend, is written as a villain, if she’s included at all. Sophie Keetch gives her a full life, an interesting personality, all in a world built around her. It shows a character in a way most retellings of familiar myths haven’t bothered to.
The adaptation of this story is just as tragic as it is powerful, but I’ve not felt so optimistic for a character’s arc for a long time. I look forward to reading the sequel, Le Fay, and seeing how Morgan fares next.
If you enjoy character driven fantasy, Arthurian mythology, or retellings that genuinely centre the figures history pushed to the margins, this is the one for you.
